Jason Wach

Senior Associate

When it comes to litigation, you’ll rely on this guy to navigate the complexities of the process. He’s an experienced litigator specialising in intellectual property, and the co-pilot of our Auckland-based Litigation team.

With a passion for music, it’s no wonder Jason’s an expert on New Zealand’s ‘threestrikes’ copyright infringement system. Advocating for the rights of Kiwi artists tends to have that result. Alongside his extensive copyright and licensing experience, he’s worked with leading fashion brands, manufacturers, software developers, and food and beverage companies to secure and enforce their rights here and abroad.

When he steps out of the office, it’s straight home to hang out with his three kids. Not only does he appreciate listening to good music, he can actually play the guitar. Nice one.

Credentials & experience

Jason recently joined our ranks having worked for the past five years as a barrister employed by one of New Zealand’s leading QC’s in the field of IP. He has also held roles in the litigation teams of two leading Auckland law firms.

He’s passionate about pursuing his clients’ interests, and is comfortable with technical subject matter.  He has appeared as counsel in the trade marks and patent offices, District Court, High Court, and Court of Appeal. Advising on disputes in the areas of trade mark opposition, validity and infringement, copyright infringement, copyright licensing, counterfeiting, trade secrets and restraints of trade, patent opposition, misleading and deceptive conduct, domain name disputes, and general commercial matters make up the back bone of his more recent experience.

Jason also has extensive experience in advising on non-contentious matters, often in the field of IP, including in relation to branding, IP licensing, manufacturing, supply and distribution agreements, and legislative compliance matters.  He knows a thing or two about advising clients on the registration side of trade marks too.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Auckland and is a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.
