When it comes to innovation, we like to think big. That’s where Jared comes in. He’s got the know-how to secure patents in the far flung reaches of the world and within a host of industries too. Jared’s forte is in the technical bits and pieces across a wide range of sectors, including animal health, dairy farming, aquaculture, vehicle suspension systems, and building and construction equipment.A little bit of competition never hurt anybody; not even when your opponent happens to be your mother-in-law. So when he’s not mapping out the complexities behind patents and securing their place in the market, he’s determined to beat his mother-in-law at Mah-jong.
Originally Jared headed up our searching team, which gave him considerable experience, before branching into a full patent attorney role. Based in the Hamilton office, Jared drafts, prepares and prosecutes patent applications for those clever thinkers based here in New Zealand and overseas. He advises on infringement and validity, and assists with patent oppositions.
Jared studied biology at the University of Waikato. As part of his work for his Masters of Science, he wandered around the wetlands of the Waikato, catching (and trying to avoid consuming) whitebait. Before joining the ranks at James & Wells, Jared taught English in South Korea. On his return to the land of the long white cloud, Jared secured a Quality Assurance role within SITEL, for Genesis Energy.
Jared is a Registered Patent Attorney in both New Zealand and Australia.
Jared is a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys (NZIPA), a member of the Patent Information Users Group (PIUG), and the Limnological Society of New Zealand. He was awarded the NZIPA prize for the highest mark in Paper E (Interpretation and Criticism) in the course of his professional examinations, and he has since been an examiner for those same professional exams.
"Jared has an extremely helpful ability to provide informative but easy to understand advice on patents and intellectual property. This makes the commercialisation process far less daunting for me and the inventors I work with. Thanks Jared!"
Jemma Harrison, Commercialisation Officer
