We need to get something out in the open. Carrick used to be an accountant. A tax accountant no less. No surprises then that at a certain age he started to think long and hard about life, the universe and everything and, stopping just shy of buying a Porsche, decided that accounting didn’t spin his wheels. That was 1996, and the rest is history.
He joined James & Wells in 2002 and now heads our Auckland office trade marks team. He is a specialist in all areas of trade mark law and practice, with a client base covering pretty much every field of endeavour imaginable, including the fashion, natural products, pharmaceutical, personal care, food, beverage and dairy industries.
While we’ve done all we can to reform him, he still harbors an interest in the dark arts of the valuation and taxation of intellectual property. As the father of a rather energetic and not always co-operative toddler, if he has any energy left Carrick burns this off either boxing, skiing, or risking life and limb as a lycra-clad cyclist.
Carrick’s experience in trade marks is extensive, and he advises both national and multi-national clients.
In his life before James & Wells, he honed his trade mark skills working in house for Rover Group Limited in the UK, as well as for one of the UK’s leading patent and trade mark attorney firms, Keltie.
Carrick is a Chartered Accountant, holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and is a Registered Patent Attorney in New Zealand and Australia.
Carrick is recommended by the World Trade Mark Review 1000 for prosecution and strategy, with judges commenting "Carrick Robinson is a natural commercial talent who draws astutely on his accountancy skills in devising prosecution strategy."
Carrick is a Fellow of the Institute of Patent Attorneys (NZIPA), a member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ) and the International Trade Mark Association (INTA), and the New Zealand College of Chartered Accountants.
He is even a contributing author to Brookers' Text on Intellectual Property Law in New Zealand, on the subject of trade mark law and practice.
"Throughout we have been impressed with the level of services received from James & Wells and the timely response to questions and situations needing to be addressed. They have been extremely thorough in their advice and honest in their assessment of likely outcomes and associated costs. We now have a very clear understanding of priorities and options and a range of strategies to choose from with each mark and name we are trying to protect. More importantly, Carrick Robinson and Sarah Harrison have been a pleasure to deal with."
Trevor Bolland, Managing Director and CEO
"Carrick has provided excellent advice and service to us for many years. The trade mark area can at times be confusing and complex, Carrick’s knowledge in this area is first class. Likewise his ability to tap into a worldwide network has been invaluable to our company as we have expanded."
Phil Ryan, Director
"Carrick’s manner on a number of international registrations through 2012 & 2013 clinched my ongoing support for Carrick and James & Wells. Of special appreciation has been the verbal communications that de-clutters the jargon and side step omissions in my own preparation."
Russell Cowley, Managing Director
