Designs
James & Wells has considerable experience in the registration of designs in New Zealand, including rights enforcement, protection and commercialisation.
If your design is applied to a manufactured article and is novel, we can help you to register it as a Registered Design in many countries – providing you with an asset which you can license or sell, and a formal right to assist in any enforcement procedures. This is particularly important if you are an exporter because copyright protection overseas is often less comprehensive in comparison to New Zealand or non-existent .
The range of services our Designs Team can provide you include:
- Advice on whether your design is able to be registered
- Clearance searches to ensure your proposed design will not conflict with the existing rights of other parties
- Registration of designs in New Zealand and internationally

Strong design is increasingly a source of competitive advantage, and protection in New Zealand isn't limited to iconic products or those with aesthetic appeal.
