Kate is a partner based in the James & Wells' Hamilton office. Kate specialises in devising intellectual property strategies for clients and is the main liaison between James & Wells and many of its corporate clients.

Through working in horticulture at Ruakura, having an electronics engineer husband and years of exposure to a wide range of inventions, Kate can confidently work with inventors to understand a very broad range of technologies.

Kate is closely involved in the management of corporate clients and their intellectual property portfolios.  She acts as an intellectual property advisor to some of New Zealand’s largest exporters and research organisations and has particular interest in the success and growth of New Zealand businesses through intellectual property protection and strategy.

Kate is the editor and instigator of the Inventors’ Guide to Success publication, and is also a contributing author to Brookers' Intellectual Property on-line text and the Intellectual Property Guide for the Life Sciences in New Zealand prepared for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. She is individually recommended by PLC Which lawyer? in the field of Intellectual Property.

Kate is regularly called upon to talk to various interest groups and businesses around the country. In addition to educating NZ businesses, Kate is also responsible for developing a significant part of the training curriculum for patent attorneys within James & Wells.

Kate has over twenty years experience in the intellectual property industry and is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys, the Asian Patent Attorney Association and the Association of Australian Patent Attorneys, and a member of the Business Advisory Board to the University of Waikato Management School.

On the personal side, Kate lives on a lifestyle block with her husband and two teenage children, is an enthusiastic amateur cook (having published her cookbook Platter Chatter), a keen gardener and a very amateur artist.”
