Kindling Cracker

They say the simplest of ideas are often the best. These are the ideas we take to the world.

At just fourteen years old, Ayla Hutchinson has already cracked the innovation market. She’s the young gun behind the Kindling Cracker; a safety inspired wood cutting design which involves no axes, no fear of nicking fingers, just clean cut kindling that anybody in the household can prepare.

Ayla’s trophy cabinet is already choca-block with awards: the Fieldays ‘Young Inventor of the Year Award’, the Fieldays James & Wells IP Services award, a win at the Fonterra Taranaki Science and Technology Fair walking away with the “First Class Award” and the ITL "Best Use of Engineering in a Science Project", the New Zealand Innovators Awards Most Inspiring Individual, and the Buy New Zealand Made Rising Star Award.

With such a simple design, the Kindling Cracker needed the right kind of protection, not only to keep copy cats away, but a strategy that reaped the commercial benefits both at home and abroad.

How we helped

Simple ideas are often the best ones and Ayla Hutchinson’s Kindling Cracker is no exception.

Ayla is a smart thinker. Before she even show-cased her invention for the first time at the Fieldays, she already had a provisional patent application in place.

It was up to us to fill in the gaps so she could get her invention from Taranaki to the rest of New Zealand quick smart.

We knew a design registration was just what the Kindling Cracker needed to ensure the aesthetic appearance was protected against being replicated as a cheap knock off. A trademark registration has ensured the Kindling Cracker logo is secure.

The Kindling Cracker now has a rather robust IP portfolio, providing secure access into international markets and opening up a number of commercial opportunities.

You see, intangible assets add to the overall value of a business. We put the right IP protection in place and got brand recognition all sorted, so Ayla and her invention are ready to take the next step; the international market. Nice.

"If you have a dream, keep working at it until it comes true - and whatever you do, DON'T GIVE UP!"
