They say the simplest of ideas are often the best. These are the ideas we take to the world.
At just fourteen years old, Ayla Hutchinson has already cracked the innovation market. She’s the young gun behind the Kindling Cracker; a safety inspired wood cutting design which involves no axes, no fear of nicking fingers, just clean cut kindling that anybody in the household can prepare.
Ayla’s trophy cabinet is already choca-block with awards: the Fieldays ‘Young Inventor of the Year Award’, the Fieldays James & Wells IP Services award, a win at the Fonterra Taranaki Science and Technology Fair walking away with the “First Class Award” and the ITL "Best Use of Engineering in a Science Project", the New Zealand Innovators Awards Most Inspiring Individual, and the Buy New Zealand Made Rising Star Award.
With such a simple design, the Kindling Cracker needed the right kind of protection, not only to keep copy cats away, but a strategy that reaped the commercial benefits both at home and abroad.
Ayla is a smart thinker. Before she even show-cased her invention for the first time at the Fieldays, she already had a provisional patent application in place.
"If you have a dream, keep working at it until it comes true - and whatever you do, DON'T GIVE UP!"
