Fair trading and consumer protection legislation in NZ
In New Zealand, businesses and consumers are protected from
unfair trading practices by a suite of legislation. The most
significant of these are:
- Fair Trading Act 1986: prohibits and provides remedies for
misleading and deceptive conduct in trade both generally and in
relation to specific types of conduct;
- Sale of Goods Act 1908: provides the legal framework in respect
of business to business transactions involving goods;
- Consumer Guarantees Act 1993: provides specific statutory
guarantees to consumers in respect of goods and services and
remedies for breaches of those guarantees by suppliers and
manufacturers.
