BACK TO CAREERS

Thank you for your interest in James & Wells Intellectual Property. The following is a guide as to what we look for, and what is required of, trainee attorneys.

Trainee Patent Attorneys

Most trainee patent attorneys preferably have a post-graduate qualification in a science discipline such as chemistry, electronics, life sciences, engineering etc. Some science graduates may also consider undertaking a law degree which assists in developing an ability to understand the legal ramifications of patent law.

Trainee Trade Mark Attorneys

For those wishing to pursue a career as a trade mark attorney a law degree is preferable. A conjoint degree in arts or science can also be of benefit as some attorneys choose to work in both the patent and trade mark areas.

Trainee IP Lawyers

A law degree and satisfactory completion of professional examinations in New Zealand are prerequisites to being an IP lawyer. If you are a lawyer from an overseas jurisdiction, to practice in New Zealand you must comply with the requirements of the Lawyers & Conveyancers Act 2006, in particular s 25 and Part 3 of the Act.
