Timber innovation showcase for RWC 2011

Christchurch's Structural Timber Innovation Company (STIC) will feature in the national 'Winning With Wood' showcase of timber innovation sites during Rugby World Cup 2011.

The display will showcase a wide range of innovative uses of wood at 30 sites throughout New Zealand during Rugby World Cup 2011.

STIC's Expan is a proprietary system that uses timber framing for multi-storey commercial buildings, with high seismic resistance as well as being environmentally sustainable. Read more in an article published in ' Business to Business'.  


2011 Bloom Her Business of the Year Awards

The founder of Tiddlers Multisport Charitable Trust (a pro bono client of James & Wells), has been awarded 'Most Inspirational Role Model' at the 2011 Bloom Her Business of the year awards.

The award recognises Vivien McCaskey's achievement in business and the commitment she has made to the Christchurch community.

Tiddlers Multisport was created in order to organise and run triathlon events which cater for children aged two to seven years old.

The most important award ever given to a New Zealand Cabernet

Stonyridge Larose 2006 has recently been awarded first place equal in the cabernet blends over $100AUD category in a blind tasting managed by Australian Winestate Magazine.

The category included well respected wines such as Latour, Mouton, and Lafite!

Rock-solid IP position helped to get $500,000 worth of new funding

Quantec Ltd, based at Hamilton's Innovation Park, has received new funding worth $500,000. The new funding will help the company get its products onto shelves in the US and China by mid 2011. Quantec have identified anti-bacterial proteins in milk which can be used to treat ailments from acne to tinea and gum disease in humans and mastitis in cows.

Rod Claycomb, Managing Director, said "One of the keys to success for commercialising innovative ideas is having a solid IP position."  "Without a doubt, we wouldn't be where we are nor have gotten the much-needed investment without having a rock-solid IP position on both patents and trademarks."

Two awards for Gopher


50 Kiwi tech companies made the Asia-Pacific Deloitte Technology Fast 500 list announced at the end of last year. Gopher, an Auckland-based online business directory was the second highest ranked New Zealand business, with growth of 1,456.33%.

Not only has Gopher been recgonised for record growth, but they were also named as a finalist in the 2010 JRA best workplaces awards.


Cuisine 2011 Artisan Awards

It's official, Heilala Vanilla is a superstar standout in the vanilla world, with their Heilala Vanilla Paste bestowed the overall runner up award at the Cuisine 2011 Artisan Awards.

This fantastic product comes from the Vava'u Islands in the Kingdom of Tonga. The vanilla is grown in organic virgin soil, on coconut husk frames, hand pollinated and dried under the Pacific Sun, then stored at optimum conditions to ensure full flavour to develop.

The Big Hug Appeal

Although not a pure client success story, March was International Endometriosis Awareness month. Sadly the exciting plans that the team at Endometriosis New Zealand had in place, lie in the rubble in Christchurch.

Turning Engineering into Art

An innovative manufacturing product, patented by James & Wells, has been exhibited at a number of the top galleries internationally.The mirror polished spheres were designed by South Taranaki company, Global Stainless Ltd, who created the components for leading London-based artist, Anish Kapoor's towering Tall Tree and the Eye sculpture.

2010 Best Design awards

The 2010 Best Design Awards, New Zealand's designs equivalent of the Oscars, were held at Auckland's Sky City Convention Centre on 1st of October.

Three James & Wells clients won awards in the Product (Non-Consumer) category: Trimax (Silver) for its Merlin mower design, Freeload (Silver) for their bicycle rack design, and Gallagher Group (Gold) for its SmartFence design.


NZ Trade & Enterprise International Business Awards

The New Zealand International Business Awards celebrates New Zealand's business successes in the world and recognise professional excellence and innovative practice.

The winner of the 'Best business operating internationally - $10m to $50m' award, was a client of James & Wells, Gallagher Security Management Systems.

Gallagher's products are used in 130 countries for a huge range of purposes - like controlling access points at an international airport, protecting small businesses from break-ins and vandalism, or keeping Asian elephants out of oil palm plantations.

One of the finalists for the 'Top IP Commercialisation' award was another client of James & Wells, Bomac Laboratories.

Rockit™ wins KPMG Food Enterprise Award at NZ Food Awards

The Havelock North Fruit Company's Rockit™ apples have soared to new heights winning the KPMG Food Enterprise Innovation Award at the recent New Zealand Food Awards held at the Langham Hotel in Auckland.

The Rockit™ apples are a tiny new variety, created in Hawke's Bay and marketed as being "sweet, crunchy and "distinctively fresh".

ZingBokashi, the eco friendly, natural way to manage New Zealand's waste, finalised a major sale in Hong Kong recently.

Breastmates is a winner in this year's Top Shop Waikato Awards (Online Retailing).

School of Rock is firing ahead in Wellington. The Rock Van is also now a reality and the bookings are coming in.

Ultrasport Helicopters has sold two helicopters, and is building up engine time on craft number three.
